NEXT MEETING: November 20 is a spouse’s night.  A representative from the Auditor’s office will inform us.  Remember to make reservations with Edie Schilla.

PAST WEEK:  Diane Rhoades was our guest speaker.  Ms. Rhoades gave us a brief course in Diabetes 101.  As a representative of the Diabetes Association, she told us that Diabetes was reaching epidemic proportions here in the U.S.  Over 21 million Americans or 1 in 14 people have diabetes.  Some are not aware that they have it.  Being overweight, sedentary, and having high cholesterol and blood pressure are risk factors.  Also those who have a blood relative or are African American are a higher risk for diabetes.

The first treatment for Type 2 Diabetes, which is the kind that most people have, is diet and exercise.  Nutrition is very important.  Ms. Rhoades was very informative.

GUESTS:    Justin Weseloh was once again a guest.

HAPPY DOLLARS:  Chrzanowski tossed in a couple of bucks for the great event put on by the I.H.S. Band Booster this past weekend.  Several dollars were gathered for Senick and the great program put on by the City on Saturday for Veterans Day. Rusnaczyk is back and had a dollar for a Browns over Pittsburgh Victory and Ohio State over Michigan State.  Duhan was delighted to have seen his three kids this past week.  Scott had a dollar for Kreizenbeck being a good sport.

COMMUNITY SERVICES:   Klepacz reminded everyone to “bring your stuff”.  He also stated that we will be getting a family for Christmas and that he will be asking the Kiwanis Board to consider purchasing phone cards for our injured military personnel.

YOUNG CHILDREN PRIORITY ONE:  Help is still needed for the University Settlement House literacy program. Transportation is needed on Mondays to take Independence students to and from the after school location.  The kids need to be there about 2:45 pm and return at 5:30 pm.  Check with Kukwaka or President Chrzanowski if you can assist.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:  Edie Schilla has planned a festive affair for December 11th.  This is our annual Christmas party to be held at the Civic Center.  Be sure to sign up your young guests so Santa brings the appropriate gift.  Sign up sheet will be sent around at our meeting.

DIVISION COUNCIL:  This Thursday, Nov. 16 is Division Council Meeting.  This is a great opportunity to “check out” what other clubs are doing.  The meeting is held at the Busch Funeral Chapel on Ridge Rd just south of Pleasant Valley and begins at 8:15 pm.  It is usually over by 9:30.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  President Chrzanowski congratulated the High School students for the wonderful event that they held over the weekend.  The “Taste of Independence” was well planned and entertaining.  Their performance of “Guys and Dolls” was very good.  He mentioned that the Kiwanis Board had voted to replace the defibulaters purchased several years ago for the churches.  These will be coming shortly.

SANTA DELIVERY IS COMING:  Sunday, December 17th is the BIG day for Santa to make his rounds.  We are in need of a sled (to borrow, or rent).  Help will be needed on Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 6:30 – 9pm and Friday, December 8 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Old Rec Building for gift drop off.

    WEEKLY THOUGHT

The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts.  No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.
